Hiç aklımda yokken bir posterde vesaire görüp çeşitli konser veya tiyatro oyunlarına gitmeyi seviyorum. Biraz maceracı gibi hissettiriyor. Bu yüzden de dil kursuna gittiğim üniversitenin binasında gördüğüm posterde garajistanbul görünce anında radarlarım açıldı, eve gider gitmez neymiş bu diye baktım.

Utrecht’in şehir sahnesi denebilecek mekanında, garajistanbul ve istanbul2010′un ortak produksiyonu Istanpoli’nin birkaç oyunu geliyormuş. Biri de Kassas. Kassas, Övul Avkıran ve Mustafa Avkıran’dan çıkma bir proje. “Oyunda”, ki oyun demek haksızlık olur, daha ziyade bir multimedia durumu. Övül ve Mustafa Avkıran sahnedeler, bir nevi Master of Ceremonies durumundalar. Ekranda ise Istanbul’un sokak satıcıları ile yapılan röportajlardan çıkanlar.

Oyunun tek güçlü tarafı bu röportajlar. Çünkü sorular ilginç, cevaplar daha da ilginç, ve çok hafif bir ortamda ilginç hikayeler dinliyorsunuz. Mesela sadece nereden geldiklerini, ne zamandır bu işi yaptıklarını değil, hiç aşık olup olmadıklarını da soruyorlar, Boğaz’da yemek yiyip yemediklerini de. Tabii Istanbul’lu için bu hikayeler yeni değil, bu insanlar da yeni değil. Ama Utrecht’te izlemek, arkadaşlarımı götürüp onların bu hikayeleri izlemesini dinlemek ayrı bir güzellikti. Maalesef aynı şeyi oyunun geri kalanı için söyleyemeyeceğim. Konsept olarak hafif bir tema seçip bir variete moduna koymak belki kulağa ilginç geliyor ama, sonuç başarısız. Sadece içeriği, ve seçilen insanlar ve onların hikayeleri nedeniyle izlenebilir geldi bana, hikayeleri çıkardığınız anda, pek bir şey kalmıyor geriye izlenebilecek.

On one of my more adventurous moments, I have noticed a poster in the building of my Dutch class for a series of plays called “Istanpoli” co-produced by garajistanbul. So, naturally, next thing I did was to check what it is, where it is and find tickets. Being more adventurous, I also invited two other friends to see it, taking the risk that it might be awful or even embarassing, but hey, then we would make fun of it together.

It was being performed in the smaller stage of the Utrecht City Stage (Stadsschouwburg), apparently not expected to draw a big crowd. Indeed, it was a small crowd, a mix of Dutch and Turkish interested in what this might be. The play, or rather the multimedia project, is co-produced by garajistanbul and istanbul2010 (- which unfortunately isn’t a reference for “good”), and was created by Övul Avkıran ve Mustafa Avkıran. The play I saw, Kassas, is about the street vendors in Istanbul and their stories. There are a million “professions” among street vendors, and even more stories of how they ended up where they ended up.

Unfortunately, the only strong point of the project is the interviews done with the different people working in the streets of Istanbul. They are asked where they are from, how long they have been doing this, but also, have they ever been in love or have they ever dined by the bosphorus. I thought the stories were not that special for an Istanbul-resident, but bringing my friends there, it was really nice for them to see these varying people, not looking clean and metropolitan, but as they do, like themselves, and telling interesting stories, being candid and open and very friendly.

I would say the end result, though, is very mediocre. The idea to put in these interviews in a “variety show” format, is a less than mediocre idea, but still, the content is strong enough to keep you going until the end.
